Carving a small mouse

This set explains the steps for carving this small mouse.

Fig 1&2

  • Mark out the side and plan views of the mouse on suitable block of wood.
  • Cut excess wood away with a chisel or saw, leaving the outline of the mouse intact.

Fig 3 & 4

  • Start to round off the sharp edges. Leave the area around the ears for the moment.
  • Add and lost detailing marks back onto the block.

Fig 5 & 6

  • Now refine the detail.
  • Remove spare wood between the ears.
  • Curve the ears outward and hollow the ears with a small gouge.
  • Cut into flanks to leave the shape of the hind legs protruding.
  • Round over the nose and thin down the snout in front of the ears.

Fig 7 & 8

  • Cut into hind quarters to leave outline of curly tail.
  • Tailor lower area of neck to make shape of feet.
  • Add gouge marks for toe spacing.
  • Add eyes and refine nose.

Fig 9

  • Sand the carving to a fine finish, remove all unnecessary gouge marks
  • Seal or oil carving to give a final finish.
